Our return trip fro Santa Marta to Cartagena was worse, taking 6 hours with our driver taking a long, unnecessary route.there must have been a highway closure because we ended up exiting the highway, and heading in the wrong direction via country backroads for 1.5 hours to connect with a different highway that ran parallel to the original highway, but further south.we never found out why this happened, but the only logical explanation would be that the driver learned of a road closure, or some massive traffic problem or protest that he felt he HAD to added 1.5 hours to the journey, and he was speeding and passing all sort of other vehicles the entire time. the bus has AC which is very important, and holds about 12-15 passengers. the trip was efficient enough for the price (42,000 Colombian pesos, one way, per person.around $21 US), and got us to Santa Marta 4.5 hours after we were picked up in Cartagena. we also made a stop in Baranquilla to pick up 3 more passengers. we then made around 4 more local stops in Cartagena before stopping at the Marsol bus station, where we waited for around 20 mins, and handled the payment. I don't know what the other buses/options are like, but Marsol picked us up, fairly promptly (within 15-30 mins of our reservation time) at the exact address we gave them in Cartagena (a private apartment address).

Marsol got the job done for us, but I don't think I'd strongly recommend them. We used Marsol to get from Cartagena to Santa Marta in August 2013.
